Life Feeling Like Whack-a-Mole? A Step-by-Step Guide to Get Out of Overwhelm

The feeling of not even knowing where to start is crippling. The desperation to change, to move forward—to do anything to break free from the cycle you’re stuck in—can feel unbearable.

I know that feeling. I felt completely alone, lost, and unsure where to begin.

I was exhausted.
I was overwhelmed.

Then came the breakdown.

It got to the point where even talking felt hard. Simple tasks felt like walking through quicksand. Getting out of bed filled me with anxiety and dread. It felt as though I hadn’t even slept. And then, I had to do the same day all over again, and again.

I'd handle one thing, and I'd already be behind on another. I'd finally tick something off my to-do list, and suddenly five more things appear out of nowhere. It’s like playing a relentless game of whack-a-mole with responsibilities, obligations, and the existential dread of never being caught up.

I became desperate—for help, for change, for something different.

Sound familiar?

When everything feels urgent, it’s easy to slip into survival mode—constantly reacting instead of actually living. The good news? Overwhelm is not a life sentence. You can break the cycle, clear the mental clutter, and get back to a place of clarity. Here’s how.

Recognising the Signs of Overwhelm (and Why It’s Not Just Stress)

Let’s be clear: overwhelm is not the same as stress. Stress is your body’s response to a challenge—sometimes, it can even be motivating. But overwhelm? That’s when your brain and nervous system tap out.

Signs you’re in full-blown overwhelm mode:

  • You can’t focus—your brain feels foggy, and even simple decisions feel impossible.

  • You’re stuck in analysis paralysis—so much to do, but where the hell do you even start?

  • You feel physically exhausted—even after sleeping.

  • The tiniest things set you off—spilled coffee, slow Wi-Fi, someone breathing too loudly.

  • You’re either hyper-busy (panic mode) or completely frozen (shutdown mode).

Recognising there's a difference between Functional and Emotional Overwhelm
It may seem obvious but there is a difference between functional and emotional overwhelm. Yes both need a reset but you can't delegate emotional overwhelm like you can a full to do list and a grounding exercise wont get find a physical solution to how you're going to cook dinner, take child no.1 to the toilet while child no.2 is having a full on meltdown. But they are both overwhelming scenarios if our system is reacting. So start to notice when you're feeling overwhelmed from functional issues or emotional and you'll start to see what tools you need to use more frequently.

The Brain Dump Method: Getting Everything Out of Your Head

When your brain is overflowing, it’s time to offload the chaos onto paper.

Why this works:

  • Your brain isn’t meant to hold all the things—getting them out clears space for solutions.

  • It separates real priorities from the stuff that just feels urgent.

  • It helps you see what you can control (and what’s just emotional clutter).

  • Now, let’s turn that messy list into action.

Small Daily Habits That Help You Stay Grounded

Let’s be real: Overwhelm won’t magically vanish forever. But daily habits can keep it from spiralling.

Why this works:

  • Small habits create big shifts over time.

  • They keep you grounded, even when life gets chaotic.

  • They help you respond intentionally, instead of reacting in panic mode.

Final Thoughts: You Are Not a Machine
(So Stop Expecting Yourself to Function Like One)

You weren’t designed to be “on” 24/7, constantly juggling all the things. Overwhelm isn’t a sign that you’re failing—it’s a signal that something needs to change.

So, take a breath. Dump the mental clutter. Make space for what truly matters. And remember: You don’t have to play the whack-a-mole game forever.

WHY DO I WRITE ABOUT THIS...

I’ve lived through it. I understand how it feels to want a radical life change but not know where to start. Feeling trapped by exhaustion, self-doubt, and confusion. I’ve felt the weight of wanting more from life but not having the energy or motivation to pursue it. I believe that feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and trapped shouldn't be normal.
