The Birthday Reset: Why I Treat Every Year Like A Fresh Start

Every year when my birthday comes around, I treat it like my own personal New Year’s Day—a chance to pause, reflect, and consciously decide how I want the next chapter to unfold.

Not in the "write a huge list of goals and try to overhaul my entire life overnight" way... instead in a way that feels more like an 'energy audit'—where I ask myself: What do I want more of (recharging me) - what do I want to have less of (draining me). Doing this rather than a tick sheet feels more like a sustainable working goal and doesn't cause the dread of failure.

Because here’s the truth I realised: if you don’t stop to notice where your energy is leaking, you’ll keep trying to “fix” symptoms—like exhaustion, overwhelm, or lack of motivation—without ever addressing the root cause. Why are you feeling like this in the first place!

Step 1: Name your Energy Leaks

Take the time to name your energy leaks... any areas of your life that feel heavy, frustrating, or unnecessarily complicated. I promise once you get them written down it will make it so much easier to start actually making the right decisions.

Energy leaks could be:

  • Something you've been avoiding for months

  • A commitment that makes you feel guilt rather than desire

  • A habit that leaves you feeling sluggish instead of energised

  • A promise that you haven't kept

You might be surprised at what comes up—sometimes it’s something so small you’ve almost stopped noticing it.

Step 2: Choose ONE Thing to Change

The key here is not to try to fix everything. That’s a one-way ticket back to overwhelm.

Instead, pick ONE leak that feels most urgent or most impactful to address.

Maybe it’s having that awkward conversation that’s been on your mind for months.
Maybe it’s clearing a physical space in your home that’s been stressing you out.
Maybe it’s making a commitment that feels realistic once you understand why you haven't kept to it before.

This one change becomes your reset point for the year.

A Tool You Can Use: The Energy Leak Gauge

  • List every recurring frustration, stressor, or habit that leaves you feeling depleted.

  • Score each one from 1–10 on how much it drains your energy.

  • Select the one that would make the biggest positive difference if it changed.

  • Commit to making a clear plan for addressing just that one thing over the next month.

Why This Works

Awareness is the start of all real change.

By choosing one intentional shift each year, you create a ripple effect that touches every other area of your life—without the burnout that comes from trying to do it all at once.

A birthday reset isn’t about reinventing yourself from scratch—it’s about taking stock, making conscious choices, and protecting the energy you need to live the way you want.

So, if your birthday is coming up (or even you want to chose to reset your year today) I challenge you to try it. Take a week to really notice your energy leaks. Then choose your one shift.

A year from now, you might look back and realise that this was the moment everything started to change.

Feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and stuck?

It’s NOT NORMAL to live in survival mode.

Your body isn’t failing you —

it’s sending you a message.

WHY DO I WRITE ABOUT THIS...

I’ve lived through it. I understand how it feels to want a radical life change but not know where to start. Feeling trapped by exhaustion, self-doubt, and confusion. I’ve felt the weight of wanting more from life but not having the energy or motivation to pursue it. I believe that feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and trapped shouldn't be normal.
